Layers of phyllo dough with walnuts and cinnamon, soaked in honey syrup.

Ingredients

  • 1lb walnuts, almonds or pecans, ground
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1lb fila sheets (in freezer section)
  • 1lb butter, melted and clarified

Syrup:

  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 cup honey

Steps

  1. Combine coarsely ground walnuts/almonds with sugar and cinnamon.
  2. Set aside.
  3. Line bottom of buttered pan, 9 x 12", with 10-12 fila, brushing each with melted butter.
  4. Sprinkle with thin layer of nut mixture.
  5. Cover with 3 fila, brushing each with melted butter.
  6. Sprinkle with more nut mixture.
  7. Repeat process, until all nut mixture is used, usually in 4 layers.
  8. Cover with remaining buttered fila.
  9. Chill 25 minutes.
  10. Cut pastry into small diamond shapes.
  11. Brush again with melted butter.
  12. Insert whole cloves in center of each piece is desired.
  13. Bake in slow oven 325 degrees for 1 hr.
  14. When slightly browned, removed from oven.
  15. Combine sugar, water, and lemon juice.
  16. Boil 10 minutes.
  17. Slowly add honey, and simmer 5 min.
  18. Slowly pour enough cooled syrup over hot Baklava until completely absorbed.

Notes

  • First cut lengthwise in pan 2 inches apart then cut those long lines diagonally across length of pan.
