Boiled flour dumplings topped with ground poppy seeds and sugar or cinnamon sugar.

Ingredients

Dough:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs, well beaten
  • 1 cup milk

Optional toppings:

  • 1 cup ground poppy seeds
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Steps

  1. Combine dry ingredients.
  2. Combine eggs and milk.
  3. Add milk/egg mixture to dry ingredients, adding more milk till able to form into a ball.
  4. Turn onto a floured surface and form into a long log approx 1 1/2" in diameter.
  5. Slice log into 1" slices.
  6. Prepare boiling water in large kettle.
  7. Cook dumplings in divided amounts in boiling water.
  8. Dumplings will sink to bottom of pan and then raise to top when close to done.
  9. To test for doneness, remove a slice and cut open to check for doneness.
  10. Remove with slotted spoon into a bowl.
  11. Add small amount of oil or butter to keep from sticking together.
  12. Combine ground poppy seed with sugar or cinnamon and sugar.
  13. Pour over cooked dumplings and serve.

Notes

  • Easy to overcook.
  • Some people like peaches with their dumplings.
